The Startups for News programme

What is Startups for News?

Startups for News is an international programme that rewards early-stage startups working on high-impact and daring solutions for the news industry. Every year, the Global Editors Network, in partnership with Journalism.co.uk, selects the best startups that address newsroom challenges through dynamic and innovative products or services.

The aim of Startups for News is to accelerate the development of promising, early-stage media startups through worldwide exposure, networking with senior media executives, and private mentorship from the Global Editors Network’s board members.

The Global Editors Network has already run five successful Startups for News seasons, and is about to host the competition’s final for the seventh at the GEN Summit 2018 in Lisbon.

How is Startups for News supporting the journalism community?

Bridging two worlds

Startups for News’s mission is to create a bridge between startups and legacy media – two worlds whose relationship could be highly beneficial but which is often too strained or sometimes non-existent.

Helping under-resourced newsrooms develop quality journalism

Too often newsrooms lack the financial and technical resources to build, in-house, the tools they need to create and distribute quality content. Startups for News introduces them to cutting-edge and easy-to-use tools that can accelerate their work and are compatible with their values.

Promoting an entrepreneurial spirit in newsrooms

Startups For News not only provides our network with new products but also with a different perspective on media innovation.

It promotes an entrepreneurial, prototype-driven, and a ‘fail forward’ approach. It inspires media executives to make their newsrooms more product-centric and user-centric organisations.

Testimonials

Hosts
David CohnSenior Director at Advance Digital
I've judged lots of startup competitions and the quality of startups in this contest is top notch. It's quickly becoming my favorite startup competition to watch. The competition is global, but everyone is focused on the news, which means the quality is really strong.
Bill HankesFounder & CEO of Sqoop
Over the past couple of years I have been to a number of journalism conferences and none of them have a similar programme to recognise or promote the startup ecosystem in the news industry as the GEN Summit.
Jeffrey KofmanFounder and CEO of Trint
We love the bragging rights that come with winning GEN's Startups for News. But we also really love the access to GEN's resources that winning SFN has brought us. Having our own Trint booth at the next GEN Summit was a real bonus - and it's part of the prize.

What happened in the last season of Startups for News?

The Startups for News programme capped its sixth season in Vienna, Austria in June, with the data visualisation startup Flourish taking the final vote of the jury. Urbs Media was the runner-up. Watch last season’s highlights in the video below
