100 media startups applied to the 2018 competition
Applications for the new edition of Startups for News closed on 8 January 2018. 100 startups applied to the competition, with inventive new tools and services for newsrooms. The startups making up this year’s roster come from the 5 continents, represent 36 countries, with the United States and United Kingdom leading the count with the most participating startups. Making a first time entrance in the competition are startups from Pakistan, Thailand, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Central African Republic, and Cyprus.
The most popular topics the competing startups are attempting to address with their solutions, are artificial intelligence, blockchain, and immersive technologies for newsrooms.
The international jury is in the process of selecting 16 startups out of the 100 participants. These semi-finalists will be announced shortly, and will face off in online pitch battles shortly after, from late February for 8 weeks. Afterwards, the 8 finalists will be invited to the GEN Summit in Lisbon, where they will get to pitch in front of 800 editors-in-chief and media executives. The winning startup for the 2018 edition of Startups for News will be announced on 1 June 2018, at the Startups for News party closing the GEN Summit.
Rules & eligibility
Participating startups must offer an innovative product or service to newsrooms.
They must have been founded no earlier than 2014.
They must have received less than $1M in external funding.
Startups that have applied in past years and have not participated in the final, at the GEN Summit, can apply again.

The 16 selected startups get recognised by industry leaders, noticed by potential partners and benefit from media coverage.
The finalists pitch on stage in front of 800 editors-in-chief, senior media executives and tech experts at the GEN Summit 2018 in Lisbon.
The finalists get to network with senior media executives in a friendly atmosphere at the GEN Summit and benefit from their feedback, insights and connections..
The winner receives exhibition space at the GEN Summit 2019 to showcase your products and/or services. Exhibition space is worth €7,000.
The winner benefits from private mentorship sessions with Global Editors Network Board Members and great exposure on the GEN media channels.
